Harpuis was a mixture of boiled linseed oil, pine resin and animal fat and was made in large boiling vats. It was used in combination with lead white to protect wood from various wood-eating worms and to prevent growth of algae. Due to the pine resin and linseed oil it had a somewhat yellowish colour. Because of the animal fat the smell was probably less than pleasant. Harpuis is nowadays (almost) no longer used as protection.
All Kolderstok paints are water-based acrylic paints. The colours are made with modern, environmentally friendly pigments. The products mentioned in the above description are not present in our paints.
The Kolderstok colour Harpuis is a slightly brownish yellow. The underwater part of the hull is painted in this colour.
Please note: applying several layers thinned with water gives a better result than one layer of undiluted paint.
