Koningsgeel (Royal yellow)

The base for this material was the mineral Auripigment or Orpiment. The name is derived from the Latin aurus (gold) and pigmentum (dye), because of the golden sheen of the mineral. As a yellow dye, it was also known as operment, yellow sulphur arsenic, russet yellow, Chinese yellow or royal yellow. In Greek it was called arsenikon and the name of the element arsenic is derived from it. The mineral was found near volcanoes and hot springs, often together with the red mineral realgar, which sometimes also ended up in the pigment powder. The toxicity of arsenic is well known: the pigment was used, for example, to protect texts from insects, and in the Middle Ages monks warned one another that even forgetting to wash one's hands before eating could be fatal. The pigment had a lemon yellow to orange tint. It was highly sought after for its high saturation and resistance to fading, a combination for which there was no alternative at the time. It was used in alchemy and people attributed all kinds of magical properties to the pigment, due to the golden colour and the strange refractive effects of the crystals. This also gave rise to the name "royal yellow" because orpiment and realgar were called the "Two Kings" of alchemy.

All Kolderstok paints are water-based acrylic paints. The colours are made with modern, environmentally friendly pigments. The products mentioned in the above description are not present in our paints.

The Kolderstok colour Koningsgeel is a fairly pale yellow. It was used in combination with lead white on ornaments and to protect wood.

Please note: applying several layers thinned with water gives a better result than one layer of undiluted paint.
