The basic pigment for meekrap is alizarin. It is also known to painters as madder. This red pigment was originally extracted from the roots of the madder plant, but is now a synthetic pigment based on phthalic acids. Alizarin was the first pigment to be made synthetically.

In the 17th century, madder was cultivated on the rich soil of Zeeland in the Netherlands for the production of red pigment. With the advent of the synthetic pigment, this branch of agriculture was completely lost.

The addition of metal salts, such as iron-based ones, allowed for the creation of various shades of red or brownish red, and heating to above 100 degrees Celsius made the colours darker.

All Kolderstok paints are water-based acrylic paints. The colours are made with modern, environmentally friendly pigments. The products mentioned in the above description are not present in our paints.

The Kolderstok colour Meekrap is a dark red, veering to brown.

Please note: applying several layers thinned with water gives a better result than one layer of undiluted paint.
