Carmine, or actually carmine acid, is a natural organic and animal-based pigment with a red colour that veers towards purple. It is also known as Cochineal Red and comes from the Cochineal Louse. This louse lives on disc cacti, and is harvested off these in large quantities. The lice are crushed, and to enhance its colourfastness the resulting moisture is mixed with other substances, such as aqua regia, tin or alum. The discovery that the addition of aqua regia and tin makes for a much more vibrant and durable red is attributed to the Dutch inventor Cornelis Drebbel in 1606-1607.

All Kolderstok paints are water-based acrylic paints. The colours are made with modern, environmentally friendly pigments. The products mentioned in the above description are not present in our paints.

The Kolderstok colour Karmijn is a deep red and combines beautifully with Meekrap (madder) and Vermiljoen (vermilion). The inside of the bulwark, gun carriages, but also ornaments and railings were painted in different shades of red.

Please note: applying several layers thinned with water gives a better result than one layer of undiluted paint.
